Allianz-cogroup is partnering with the International Green Gown Awards to encourage the next generation to take action for a sustainable future.

Administered by EAUC-The Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education (EAUC) and supported by UN Environment Programme, the International Green Gown Awards was launched in 2013 to recognize exceptional sustainability initiatives undertaken by universities and colleges across the globe.

With over 20 years of experience, Allianz-cogroup is proud to be a leading asset manager in the field of Sustainable Investing. We encourage all academia – regardless of location and scale – to take part and exchange sustainability ideas and initiatives. Through the power of collaboration, we believe that business and academia could bring together insights and inspiration and magnify our positive impact for a sustainable future for generations to come.

For the 2023 International Green Gown Awards, two more categories have been added: Nature Positive and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Sustainability.

After a very successful start to our partnership with the International Green Gown Awards last year, we are looking forward to seeing even more innovative projects and ideas from universities and colleges in 2023 on how to tackle global sustainability challenges. In particular, we are excited by the addition of the two new categories to address the crisis in biodiversity and the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Biodiversity is becoming a major theme for financial institutions, and we are glad to see the higher education sector also coming together through the UN-backed Nature Positive Universities Alliance to play its part. Equally importantly, we must cultivate a mindset that every one of us is a stakeholder in our future and the importance of providing and promoting equal opportunities for all.

2030 Climate Action

Institutions are having to plan how they get to net-zero emissions. This category focuses on the steps that institutions are taking and planning to take to reach their targets. The judges are looking for innovative ideas and approaches that institutions are taking or planning.

Benefitting society

This category captures the powerful and innovative ways education institutions are realising their purpose in today’s society to benefit the lives of individuals, communities and wider society.

Creating impact

This category recognises institutions that have achieved significant sustainability-related outcomes, on-campus or within their community, using minimal and/or limited resources.

Next generation Learning and Skills

This category recognises achievement in the development of academic courses, skills and capabilities relevant to sustainability.

Student engagement

This category reflects that students and staff must work together to achieve goals using “top-down” and “bottom-up grass roots” methods to achieve maximum understanding and engagement across an institution.

Sustainability Institution of the Year

This category recognises sustained, whole-institution commitment and impact to becoming a sustainable organisation.

Nature Positive - NEW for 2023

This category champions institutions that are taking action to promote nature on their campuses, in their operations and teaching and research as well as working in partnership with their local communities.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Sustainability - NEW for 2023

This category recognises collaborations and innovate approaches that staff and students take to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in their sustainability work.

Awarding sustainability excellence

Established in 2004, the Green Gown Awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities, colleges and the learning and skills sectors across the world, recognising that the education sector can lead a path to efficiency, employability and better quality of life for us all. The Green Gown Awards are administered by the EAUC – the Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education.

The Green Gown Awards are also delivered on a regional basis in Australasia, UK & Ireland, French speaking as well as the International Green Gown Awards supported by the United Nations Environment Programme, the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), L’Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and International Association of Universities (IAU).
